Physician staffing and patient violence.

We found an inverse relation between physical aggression by patients and physician staffing--when
more physicians were available, physical aggression decreased. Episodes of nonphysical aggression
increased with higher levels of psychiatrist staffing, but were not related to general physician
staffing.
