You are invited to Spain

Daryl Matthews MD PhD

As we enter the new millenium, AAPL invites you to participate in its first International CME Program, to be presented June 23-27, 2000 in Madrid, Spain. This program is being produced in collaboration with the Spanish Society for Legal Psychiatry (SEPL). The CME Program will be held in conjunction with the first World Psychiatric Association Thematic Conference on Legal and Forensic Psychiatry which is jointly sponsored by SEPL. SEPL is AAPL’s counterpart in Spain and is the country’s largest and most highly respected professional association in forensic psychiatry.

The Conference will cover a broad range of topics within the area of forensic psychiatry. It will include both submitted papers and invited speakers, representing the best in forensic psychiatry across the globe. Hundreds of pre-registrations have already been received from across Europe, Asia, and North and South America.

The CME Program will feature 20 Category 1 hours with four of AAPL’s most highly acclaimed teachers--speakers that have received the very highest ratings at past AAPL meetings: Paul Appelbaum MD, Park Dietz MD, Phillip Resnick MD, and Robert Simon MD.

Topics will include violent and suicidal behavior, paraphilias and sex crimes, malingering, competence and consent, and disability and psychic harm. Each faculty member will present his own unique perspective on the topic under study, and all have been asked to focus on both pertinent domestic and international issues.

The Conference and the CME Program will run concurrently at the modern and elegant Hotel Eurobuilding in the heart of Madrid. The official languages of the Conference and CME Program will be both Spanish and English with simultaneous translation throughout. The meeting will include a number of social activities and there will be ample opportunity to take in the many highlights of central Spain. You will be able to visit beautiful historic towns near Madrid (e.g. El Escorial, Toledo, Segovia, Avila) as well as to explore the richness of Madrid itself (e.g. the Prado Museum, the Royal Palace, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, the Reina Sofía Art Centre). We are planning on a balance between work and exciting travel opportunities.

The AAPL Education Committee and the Council have overseen program development, assuring the quality you have come to expect from AAPL programs over the past 30 years. This will represent the first AAPL CME activity available outside the Review Course and the Annual Meeting, and the first time AAPL has co-sponsored an international meeting. It will be an enormously exciting five days featuring the world’s finest in forensic psychiatry in one of Europe’s most exciting capitals.

You may pre-register by calling the AAPL central office at 800-242-5450. If you would like to request an abstract form to present a paper, or if you would like further information, please contact Daryl Matthews MD PhD, AAPL’s liaison with SEPL, by phone (808-735-8505) or by Email dmatthews@jhu.edu.
