Charles Dike Scholarship

Established in 2021, the Charles Dike Scholarship is awarded by the Diversity Committee of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law (AAPL). AAPL is proud to award two annual scholarships to advance diversity, equity and inclusion in the field of Forensic Psychiatry.

Purpose:
• To increase membership of forensic psychiatrists from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups in AAPL by creating a welcoming and supportive environment.
• To support and enhance the growth of forensic psychiatrists within AAPL that identify as belonging to underrepresented racial and ethnic groups.
• To encourage early career forensic psychiatrists from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups in AAPL who show promise within the field of forensic psychiatry to remain active AAPL members.

This award is open to underrepresented racial and ethnic groups (people of color) of AAPL. These include:
• Black
• Hispanic/Latinx
• American Indian/Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian
• Asian-American
• Anyone who identifies as a person of color

Eligibility Criteria
• Completed Forensic Fellowship Program
• Current AAPL member
• Within three (3) years of completing fellowship, i.e. early career
• Demonstrated activity in AAPL and contributions to the field of forensic psychiatry. (Examples include: serving on an AAPL committee or presentation at the Annual Meeting, including a poster; documented scholarship related to forensic psychiatry; publication in JAAPL or any other peer-reviewed Journal would be an asset.

Application Requirements
• Submit a brief statement (250-word maximum) stating interest in remaining active in AAPL, and future plans regarding forensic psychiatry. Include the underrepresented racial and ethnic perspective you represent.
• Two (2) letters of reference from senior forensic psychiatrists familiar with the applicant’s work and character

Management and Oversight
• To be awarded to two candidates each year to cover the cost of Annual Meeting registration and hotel charges
• Selection and management of candidates will be undertaken by the Diversity Committee
• The selected individual will be assigned to a mentor
