Ethics Guidelines

Ethical guidelines are foundational to forensic psychiatry, guiding practitioners as they work at the intersection of mental health and the legal system. They set clear standards for objectivity, professional competence, confidentiality, and respect for individuals’ rights, helping forensic psychiatrists navigate complex roles such as evaluator, expert witness, and consultant.

Adherence to these guidelines protects the integrity of forensic opinions, promotes fairness in legal proceedings, and safeguards public trust. By grounding practice in well-established ethical principles, forensic psychiatrists ensure their work is credible, impartial, and aligned with both medical professionalism and the demands of justice.

The resources on the right provide valuable insight into forensic psychiatry ethics and their evolution.  They include a newly released a two-part video titled “Contemporary Issues in Forensic Psychiatric Ethics” as well as a video from a panel discussion at the 2022 AAPL Annual Meeting titled, “Remembering Dr. Alan Stone and his Impact on Forensic Psychiatry”.  The bibliographies associated with these resources are also provided.  The videos can be obtained free of charge for all AAPL members using the links provided.
